The 20 :: Your Daily Cup of Culture (#208)

I’m envious, for example, of people obsessed with the Civil War, which brims with details but is contained. In my case, the monsters recede but never vanish. They are long dead and being born as I write.

Your Daily Cup of Culture...

Here's The 20 things I found on the internet worth sharing today. Ventipop's Grind posts can be fun, serious, thoughtful, some great new song or something to buy. If not, you can get your money back.

If you find any peace and value in what I do, any donation, big or small, means a lot and helps keep spreading the positive vibes.

1. All The Feels - Don't forget you can view all the best Feels Videos right here.

2. Profit from Frugality - Elizabeth Willard Thames abandoned a successful career in the city and embraced frugality to create a more meaningful life. It enabled her to retire at 32 with her family to a homestead in the Vermont woods...and who doesn't want to escape this world in the Vermont woods?

3. What About Geoffrey? - Toys R Us may have gone the way of the dinosaur, but what about their iconic mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe?

4. Get Your Goat - A Florida couple decided to ask for 1,000 goats instead of wedding gifts — for a charitable cause.

5. DIY Why? - A Bay Area couple has gone viral with a picture they posted on Twitter. While remodeling their bathroom, the contractor found this gem hidden in the walls from the former owners:

FUTURE CULTURE

6. The Windowless Plane with "Windows" - Stick with me here. Planes of the future may not have any windows on the outside, but instead will beam actual images from outside the plane to virtual screens inside.

7. Starbucks Strawless Lids (Say That 3X Fast) - As The Anti-Plastic-Straw Trend Gains Speed, Starbucks Will Pull Plastic Straws Worldwid.

8. Face Time - Restaurants are using facial-recognition software to remember how you like your burger

9. The Kiosks Are Coming! - People tend to buy more from a kiosk than they do an actual worker. The guy in this article says that's because they dwell longer in front of a kiosk than they do in front of a worker. I think it's because a kiosk is less likely to judge you when you order that third quarter pounder with cheese.

10. The Future of the Funeral? - "Aquamation," a greener form of body disposal, is gaining acceptance in America.

11. Thai Cave Rescue Operation - Somebody needs to give this graphics guy a raise:

12. Obligatory Coffee Link of the Day - I forgot my obligatory coffee link of the day in Friday's 20 Things...my punishment? No coffee for the entire day. I will never forget again. Now, on to today's link: You Feel Like Shit Because You’re Drinking Your Morning Coffee Too Early

13. Humorous Yet True - Nine Things I Learned When I Became a Honeymoon Planner for Billionaires

14. Gaming - 'Fortnite' Season 5: Here's What We Know So Far And What To Expect

15. Blind Pilot - Imagine that one day, at a young age, you're told that something was wrong with your vision. Like a race against time, each day your vision deteriorates a little bit more until one day you wake up and, like that, your sight is gone. That's exactly what happened to Dan Mancina, a skateboarder from Livonia, Michigan, just outside of Detroit.

16. Book Obsession of the Week - Michelle McNamara's "I'll Be Gone In The Dark" tears at you on many levels. First of all, the subject matter in and of itself is harrowing. McNamara succinctly details the horrific crimes perpetrated on many victims during the 1970's and 80's, however she never dwells heavily on the gory details. Still, it's a lot to take in. And then there's the story of McNamara herself, a gifted journalist who died tragically while investigating the case of the Golden State Killer. She never got to complete the book herself or take comfort in the fact that her book may have played a major role in the actual capture of the Golden State Killer in April of this year. I'm halfway through the book, and can't wait to settle back in tonight for more. Highly recommended read.

17. Wonder Woman - Gal Gadot makes surprise visit to children's hospital in full Wonder Woman costume.

18. Immigration, Eh? - Canada's secret to welcoming immigrants without triggering massive populist backlash.

19. Science of Ballooning - Scientists are finally starting to understand the centuries-old mystery of “ballooning.”

20. New Song of the Day - "I Built A Friend" by Alec Benjamin
