Favorite Songs 2017 :: 10-1

I don't believe in writing about music. No two people will ever hear the same song in the same way ever. So, what may be a great song to me, may be nails on a chalkboard to others and it's not up to me to try and convince anyone one way or the other. I can only say these are the songs that survived from my 100 song pool because they mean something to me or I found them on repeat the most this year. I can only hope you've heard something you like or discovered an artist you'd never heard before while listening to these 100 Favorite Songs of 2017.

Some movie critics make their best movies of the year list by asking themselves which movies are the most rewatchable; only those they feel they're going to be watching for years to come make the final list. That's sort of what I did here. If I think it's a song I'll still be hearing in my head or hitting play on down the line...hopefully it's on here. We're already over halfway home. Happy New Year.

Merry Christmas To You & Yours

Thanks for supporting Ventipop as we learn to walk on wobbly legs. Maybe by this time next year, I'll have figured out what this little endeavor is going to grow up to be. However, the excitement always rests in the unknown.

Wishing you and yours only the best. If you're reading this, you have something to be thankful for. Here's a video I made last year at Christmas time which encompasses everything I'm thankful for.

Mental Yoga Sunday :: Issue No. 26

I bought my brother some gift-wrap for Christmas. I took it to the Gift Wrap department and told them to wrap it, but in a different print so he would know when to stop unwrapping.

Exhale. You've almost made it through. This time next week, all those presents will be wrapped, placed neatly under the tree and your checkbook balance will once again begin making its way higher than your credit card balance. Maybe. Ahhh...the joy of the holidays. In the meantime, enjoy a few of my favorite long reads of the past two weeks:

We got to the moon on Christmas Eve 1968, at the end of a poor year for this country. We had Vietnam. We had civil unrest. We had the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King. But we went around the moon and saw the far side for the first time. A script writer couldn’t have done a better job of raising people’s hope.

10 Random Things

How does a band from the 1980's without any number one hits to its name outsell Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars in 2017?

"Restaurant owners would pay me £10 and I'd write a positive review of their place, despite never eating there...This convinced me that TripAdvisor was a false reality...I had a revelation: within the current climate of misinformation, and society's willingness to believe absolute bullshit, maybe a fake restaurant is possible? Maybe it's exactly the kind of place that could be a hit? In that moment, it became my mission. With the help of fake reviews, mystique and nonsense, I was going to do it: turn my shed into London's top-rated restaurant on TripAdvisor." - How the Shed at Dulwich became London's #1 restaurant despite not really existing.

"One whiff and you're Stiff" - Residents of a tiny Irish village where Viagra is manufactured have complained that fumes from a nearby factory have been giving them a hard time.

How the US Military helped invent Cheetos is just one of many interesting excerpts from Anastacia Marx de Salcedo's book Combat-Ready Kitchen.

Community, Curation, Convening - How Independent bookstores are surviving and thriving despite the beast called Amazon.com.

"In a small town near the Vermont-Canadian border, the latest skirmish in the fight for affordable internet access is being waged by a 65-year-old woman pushing a laptop around in a baby stroller." - How a Retired Nurse Provides Her Small Vt. Town With Internet

Avocado Hand - “We’ve had the mini, the giant, ready sliced and we’re now launching the holy grail of avocados – stoneless. This amazing fruit has been on our radar for a couple of years and we’re very excited to have finally been able to get hold of some for our customers to try.”

Literally, Re-Inventing The Wheel - NASA has came up with a new "tire" that can compress down to the axel and still return to form:

Superhero Photographer - “The whole idea was to take the things that are weaknesses for the kids such as cancer and other diseases and turn them into strengths,” Rossi tells PetaPixel. “I worked with 6 kids under the age of 8 and completed a movie poster style image for each of them.”
